At the November, 2002 meeting the Board of Directors of the SDI voted to amend the Steel Deck Institute Design Manual (publication number 30) by relaxing the ban on loads suspended from roof deck. During the last several years, roof construction has changed - mopped on mastics are seldom used now - and, the use of deep decks on longer spans has become more common. The commentary after the Scope (page 24) in the Design Manual has been eliminated and the following section and commentary have been added.

3.3a Suspended Loads. All suspended loads must be included in the analysis and calculations for stress and deflection. The designer must take into account the sequence of loading.

Commentary: Suspended loads may include ceilings, light fixtures, ducts or other utilities. The designer must be informed of any loads applied after the roofing has been installed.

The SDI Board of Directors also amended and clarified sections 3.4 and 3.5 of the Code of Recommended Standard Practice (pages 6 and 7 of the Design Manual). The first paragraph of each section has been changed as shown here. The second paragraph of each section remains as it is.

3.4 Approval: The erection layouts shall be submitted to the buyer for approval unless the buyer instructs the seller to submit same directly to the architect or waives his right of approval. The buyer (or architect) shall return one copy marked with his approval or with such corrections as he may deem necessary. Resubmission of approval drawings, if required, shall be made only after all requested dimensions and information is provided by the approving body. The seller shall not start shop work prior to final approval of his drawings unless such approval is waived.

3.5 Changes in Scope after Contract: When changes in the project scope as contracted are made via revised contract drawings, steel erection drawings, modified approval drawings, response to RFI's, etc., an extra for material and/or redetailing costs shall be paid by the buyer at a price agreed upon by the buyer and seller.
