Group Consensus on Proposed Standards

The ANSI Process

The Steel Deck Institute (SDI) is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO).

ANSI Accredited Standards Developers use a process that is governed by the ANSI Essential Requirements. The process is open and balanced to assure due process for the development of standards. The requirements apply to activities related to the development of consensus for approval, revision, reaffirmation, and withdrawal of American National Standards. The SDI became an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer in 2003.

Due process means that any person (organization, company, government agency, individual, etc.) with a direct and material interest has a right to participate by: a) expressing a position and its basis, b) having that position considered, and c) having the right to appeal. Due process allows for equity and fair play. The ANSI Essential Requirements constitute the minimum acceptable due process requirements for the development of a consensus.

The SDI uses the Canvass Process as described in its Operating Procedures for developing and maintaining American National Standards. When these Operating Procedures do not address an issue, the ANSI Essential Requirements serves as the precedent document.

When SDI Standards come up for review or revision, notifications will be published in ANSI Standards Action and other appropriate publications. Solicitations for canvass body members and notifications for public review of Standards will be listed on this page.
